The term “Green Technology” is vastly confusing and does not have a common definition. However, as per Agenda 21adopted under the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development Agenda, Green Technology is related to the “environmentally sound technology (which was adopted by the UN).”
The term can be broadly used to describe as a technology of sorts which will help and improve the quality of our living as well as the environment significantly. According to the UN Agenda 21, environmentally sound technologyshould:
• Make use of renewable sources of energy more sustainably.
• Protect the environment.
• Inhibit pollution.
• Recycle their wastes and products.
• Handle the residues in manufacturing and other practice, in a proper manner.
In terms of pollution, “Green Technology” has been basically used to include both processes as well as technologies in relation to the above-mentioned points. In a nutshell, according to Joshua Mosshart, such technologies could be described as technologies that can not only minimalize wastage, which generates low or next to no-wastage. Furthermore, it is also used to "end-of-the-pipe" technologies for treating pollution.
Green Technology does not mean developing individual technologies, but also includes:
• Know-how
• Procedures
• Goods and Services
• Know-how for equipment, and
• Organizational and managerial procedures.
Basically, the term Green Technology’s ambit covers the following:
• Environmental technologies for monitoring and assessment,
• Remediation and restoration
• Pollution prevention and control
Furthermore, the environmental technologies for monitoring and assessment are used to measure and assess the various materials that are released in nature. Apart from this, these technologies are also used to monitor various environmental hazards.
Also, the prevention technologies help in the production of such resources that avoid the hazardous substances in nature and also to inhibit the human activities that cause environmental degradation or harm to the environment. Furthermore, it also encompasses product substitution or redesigning as per the present requirements. Products which facilitate less pollution and inhibits destruction to the environment are developed and employed.
With the recent increase in more sources of energy, which are renewable and sustainable, many developments have been made in the sector of Environment Protection. With prominent names such as Joshua D. Mosshart leading in the front, even UN has been developing various rules and regulations for monitoring and assessing resources and their use.
Furthermore, since our lives cannot work without energy, quests have been initiated in searching for sustainable, clean and renewable sources.
